Heat the oil in a large pan that has a lid.

Peel and mince the onions.

Fry the onions on low heat about 5 minutes, while stirring.

Stir in the sugar and cover the lid tightly and cook on very low heat for about 20-30 minutes, stirring about every 5 minutes.

Let the onions cool slightly and then mix everything together, adjusting soy sauce to the desired saltiness.
